What can PTO members vote on?
PTO members play an important role in helping guide the organization. Members who are in good standing (with dues paid) are able to vote during general PTO meetings.
These votes may include:
Voting on major changes, such as updates to the bylaws
Voting on matters like the removal of an officer, if ever needed
Each member has one vote, and decisions are typically made during scheduled PTO meetings. This ensures that members have a voice in key organizational decisions.
-
Who can be a board member?
To serve on the PTO Executive Board, you must first be a PTO member in good standing. This includes any parent, guardian, or family member of a student who has paid annual dues.
Members must have their dues paid at least 14 days prior to voting and be eligible to serve in an officer role. They must also be able to pass a background check provided by the district.
Board members are selected through the nomination and voting process outlined in the bylaws, and all positions are filled by individuals who are committed to supporting the school, students, and PTO mission.

How does board voting work?
According to our PTO bylaws, when there is an open position on the Executive Board, a nominating committee is formed to identify and recommend qualified candidate(s). Those candidates are then presented to the current Executive Board.
The Executive Board reviews the recommendation and votes to approve individuals during a board meeting (or via email, if needed). Executive Board meetings are working meetings where official board decisions are made, and the board meets once a month.
If there is a large amount of interest and multiple candidates for positions, the board may choose to hold a public vote during a General Meeting to allow members to participate in the selection process.
PTO members continue to play an important role by participating in general meetings, sharing input, and voting on general PTO matters. The selection of Executive Board members, however, follows the process outlined above.
